Will it grow a new lawn on top of the old one without having to dig up the old lawn and make a mess etc. Don't want to use weedkillers as pets use the lawn.

  1. Actually you can with a high success rate.I have done this using a planters mix (from a landscaping supply yard) grade,re seed and cover with straw to help hold the moisture in.A bit unsightly at first but a good helper to start grass.

As for weed control and pets. You are going to have to make a logical choice, your lawn needs nutrients. When applying keep your pets off the grass till it's safe,a call to the various makers will help with how long.

    Just some thoughts

  2. Add dirt to the holes and compact it down. You don't need to remove the old grass first. Smooth the surface so that the dirt is level with your existing dirt. Then rake lightly and spread the grass seed. The best time to do this is late summer or early fall.

Don't use weedkiller -- it is unnecessary.

  3. Before you plant the new seed, I would leave the compost for a few weeks to check if any perennials come through

  4. Yes, or add fill then sod.
