My son hit a pipe with the lawn mower. The lawn mower started to shake and rattle. I changed the blade but now the mower will not continue to run without someone constantly pumping the primer. What is wrong and what do I do to fix it???

  1. Your primer bulb has a crack in it and air is getting in through it . I had the same problem. Get a new primer bulb.

    Hope this helps.

  2. not enough info to diagnos beyond the fact that gas is not making it to combustion unless you prime. This could due to any number of causes.

  3. I would say that you sheared the flywheel to crankshaft key.  This happens when you hit something with the blade.  It is made to unload the weight from the crankshaft to prevent internal engine damage.  It effects the timing and will make it not run or run poorly.  You will have to remove the engine cowling and the flywheel nut.  With the nut off you can see the keyways in the flywheel and crankshaft.  The must be aligned.  If not pull the flywheel and replace the key.    If this not the problem I would say that the shaking disloged some debris and the carburetor is the problem.

  4. You either need a carburetor adjustment or a cleaning. There is a very small hole the gas is delivered to the carburetor through, sometimes it will become blocked with debris thus blocking the flow. Same thing with the adjusting needle valve. you can use a screwdriver to turn it all the way in ( COUNT THE NUMBER OF TURNS) then back it out same number of turns. You may need to make a fine adjustment to get it to run smooth again.

  5. sounds like either the carburetor is bad, or the float is sticking. Another thing to check is the cut off switch. I friend of mine borrowed my mower and did much the same thing. But, he somehow broke the cutoff cable to my mower and it would do that. He then kept priming it. It was locked up when I got it back. I pulled the spark plug and pulled it. Gas shot out of the spark plug hole. If it is the cut off switch, you can go to the magneto and loop the wire that causes a ground. check your valves also. John F could also be right about a cracked priming bulb.

  6. When you hit the pipe, you knocked the key and its out of time.  Take the lawnmower apart and pull off the flywheel, go to the store and get a new key and put it back together.  its ok.

  7. new carburettor.

  8. beings it hit a pipe......may have cracked the key on the flywheel...(top wheel) which would make the timing off
