Question:

My leg cast got taken off yesterday. Why does my leg look like this?

OK, so my leg has been in a cast for four months. In the first few months I had a cast with an external frame in my leg so it obviously now leaves a wound.

When they took the cast off yesterday, they swabbed the wounds, then put dressings on them. I peeled back the dressing slightly, and it looks like there is black stuff with dry skin over it. Is this just blood?

Please advise!

  1. Yeah, it is blood. If it were getting infected, it would be red and painful, with red streaks being the classic sign. No worries.

Now go wash your stinky, scrawny leg and get some sun on it !!

  2. It is just dirt and grime, you haven't washed your leg in months!

  3. From the sounds of things, I think it's just dried blood. But, to be on the safe side, give your doctor a call and tell him/her how it looks. They might ask a few extra questions, and you'll need to be detailed.
