Question:

My legs hurt after I run?

For PE this year my class has to run a mile every morning then do various activities (powerwalking, relays, games, volleyball, etc). My legs really hurt afterwards. I'm pretty sure it's the muscles. I'm fat so I probably have more pain than anyone else. How can I relieve the pain? I don't want to give up running. I try to stretch the best I can before and after I run.

  1. your probably just out of shape. i just started running last month and that happens to me also. just try to ignore the pain and then after a while your legs wont be sore after you run.

  2. I'm guessing that since you are overweight that you don't get much exercise.  since you don't that means that any physical activity will put you into anaerobic respiration which means that you aren't getting oxygen to your muscles.  just keep working hard and take an advil every once in a while.  DRINK PLENTY OF WATER!!!

    GOOD LUCK

  3. Medial tibial stress syndrome, or shin splints as most people call this problem, is commonly seen in athletes who suddenly increase their duration or intensity of training. This type of shin splints may also be seen in athletes who have very high demand training levels, such as marathon runners, even if their training levels are not dramatically increased.

Icing an injured body part is an important part of treatment. Icing injuries can be effective for sprains, strains, overuse injuries and bruises.

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory pain medications, commonly referred to as NSAIDs (pronounced en-sayds) are some of the most commonly prescribed medications, especially for patients with orthopedic problems such as arthritis, bursitis, and tendonitis. These medications are available over-the-counter (e.g. Ibuprofen, Motrin, Aleve) or as a prescription (e.g. Celebrex, DayPro, Relafen). NSAIDs are effective at pain relief (analgesia), and to reduce swelling (anti-inflammatory).

  4. It may just be that your legs aren't used to so much running. After a while, your legs should get better, and what you're doing now (stretching) is a good thing. You should also stretch out after running. If the pain is really bad, try using an ice pack on your legs, and then using a hot pack after that.
