Iv got a patternless carrot tail leopard gecko about 4 months old , so my problem is that about a week ago it stoped eating , so i started opening its mouth and putting the prey (crickets) in its mouth about halfway in and it then eats it by it self , id just like to know what could cause the gecko loosing its appetite . Thank you

  1. force feed it by opening its mouth and using tweezers to feed it a cricket/locust. or it might not be hungry

  2. This may sound odd but is his tail skinny or fat?

Gecko's store fat from they're food in their tails so if he has a full tail then it's not too big of a problem, they'd rarely eat full meals every day in the wild.

If you have any concerns you can always phone your vet for advice before taking him in for any treatment.

  3. you are not feeding it the right foods that's why.

  4. If it has a fat tail relax, sometimes geckos just aren't hungry?

Make sure that you've got the proper heating temperatures.

Don't force feed the gecko, unless it is really necessary. Offer it food everyday and remove any uneaten crickets.

Make sure it is pooping/getting enough water cause it might have a loss of appetite from dehydration or constipation.

Trying a variety of insects would be good, try meal worms (they can be used as a staple other than crickets). Maybe it is bored of crickets?

  5. They do slow down when it's cool out and the day light hours decrease.  Also, they eat less when getting ready to shed.  Most important is to be sure the surface temperature on the floor of his tank is kept around 90F.  This can only be accomplished with an under tank heat mat and measured with a digital probe thermometer.  They must have belly heat to digest!  Overhead lights are neither needed or recommended.  These are nocturnal animals that hide all day in the dark and are active at night.
