  1. So you don't end up having a high electric bill again, I would change everything to florescent light bulbs.  You wouldn't thing that it makes a difference, but, it does.  Also,  I don't know how much you make in a month, but you might qualify for the CARE program.  "The California Alternate Rates for Energy (CARE) program offers income-qualified customers a discount of 20% or more off their monthly electric bill."  This particular one is for California or SCE residence.  So if you don't have this electric company, check out your electric company.  The link to this one is: http://www.sce.com/RebatesandSavings/inc...

Hope this helps and good luck!

  2. YOu know whats worst, is that they will charge you a reconnection fee even though you are obviously in a bind. You could call and demand they turn it on becuase you have a newborn in the house, that might work.

  3. Fire up the propane grill, invest in a few second hand books from Garage sales and the like, often less than $1 a piece, wash clothes by hand. Boil water for baths.

You're no longer using Electricity, so there's no risk of racking up more electric bills... Call your Utilities company, they'll have some sort of finance department, set up a payment arrangement.

Contact help organizations, (Salvation Army, United Way etc.) contact your local MP or Member of Congress (Canada/U.S.) explaining the situation and asking for suggestions on local aide groups.

Keep your chin up, let the sun be your alarm clock each morning, and your kiss good night each evening.

Also, since you don't have electricity, and thus no way to connect a highspeed internet device, you should contact you ISP and cancel your internet to save more monthly bills.

Having no electricity isn't the end of the world, it just sometimes takes some adjusting to realize that.

The key is to remember, food, shelter, clothing, hygiene. Keep your family safe and healthy first and foremost.

  4. Always pay for rent, electric, food - forget helping the family until those items are accomplished.

Sounds like your electric bill may be/is too high as it is.  Use less energy. Check your electric use against what a typical house hold of your size should pay.  It could be possible that someone is stealing power or you have a bad appliance...

  5. Have you tried contacting the Salvation Army for assistance?
