  1. I don't know what part of the country you live in but Oregon, California, Arizona (maybe more) is having  trouble with a Japanese beetle that is killing our trees. I saw these beetles up close when in Oregon. They are light color brown, big body, long wings and like to even land on humans. They get down into the bark which then slowly find branches dying.  Check the bark closely on your tree and look for any entrance holes. Hope that's not what it is. Because the only way I guess they are fighting this pest is by cutting down the trees for disposal.  Good Luck!

  2. Take one of the dying branches to a garden center or an arborist and let them take a look.  If there are holes in the bark and the sap is coming out of the holes you probably have an infestation of Spruce Beetle.  They burrow into the inner bark to feed and lay eggs.  The larva then continue to eat until the tree finally dies.  A previous poster mentioned that the only cure is to cut the tree.  That is true in a commercial sense where spraying an entire forest for a small percentage of insect kill isn't feasable.  In your case, with one little tree, and if you catch it soon, it may be treatable with insecticides.

  3. Could be spider mites.  If you see webs on the dieing branches that is probably what they are.  Spray everywhere you see webs with a mixture of dish washing liquid and water (about double the strength you would use to wash dishes).  Repeat in a week if necessary.
