My little dog *shorty* loves ice - is that harmful for his teeth?

He's a young adult dog 3 years old. Every time someone is getting ice he runs to the kitchen. If one of my kids drops a cube he snatches it up and runs away to eat it. They sometimes give it to him. His vet says it's okay. I don't let my kids eat ice because i'm afraid it will chip a tooth or damage fillings. What's your opinion? BTW, if I leave a unopened cup of juice, pepsi or whatever he will find a way to get at it and get the ice and ruins my drink. Why the obsession with ice? The vet says, his mouth is fine and no problems.

  1. my dog loves frozen hamburger...  =)

  2. Yes it is unbelievably hazardous

  3. Some animals just like ice it cant come down to a science but if you let them eat to much ice it could lower there internal body temp, if that gets to low they could get hypothermia

  4. My dogs love ice. I give it to them all the time. Some dogs just like it. Mine will play with it for awhile then go to town and eat it.

  5. Dogs like ice ... they like the coolness and the crunchyness.

If you want to give your dog a read treat, get a dog rope chew toy.  Just the little piece of rope with knots at the ends, soak it in a little low fat/low sodium chicken broth then freeze it.  Or make ice cubes out of the same broth.  He'll love it.  It's an especially good treat on hot days.

(And a dog getting hypothermia from ice cubes?  That's like saying you'll get hypothermia from eating a snow cone ... *rolls eyes*)

  6. Lots of dogs love ice cubes, my dog does.  He likes to chew them up and play with them.  I doubt that it will harm their teeth.

  7. Ice is fine, for both your kids and your pup!

I've chipped my tooth on an APPLE but never an ice cube.

My dogs love ice as well, I think mine like the fact that they can destroy it so easily.

Put your drinks up higher :)
