Both of his ears are infected - poor little thing, i hate seeing him like this and its the first time hes been sick since he was born, so it really sucks! Anyways, hes on antibiotics, and the doctor has suggested i give him panadol 4 hourly to keep the fever down - but the problem is, he HATES it! He pretty much vomits when he takes it cos he hates the taste so much. Ive got nurofen too, but the doctor said that the panadol is better to keep the temp down - any suggestions?

Hes 13 months, by the way

  1. my kids are 11 15 16 18 (son had leukemia) and i always trusted children's tylenol there are multiple flavors and kids don't seem to mind it.i always hated it when they were sick... just hold him and try to keep him comfy..   good luck

  2. Depending on what flavour the pannadol is can make all the difference. I use nurofen on both my kids and it is the orange flavoured one. I have found that the 5-12 year pannadol is orange flavoured too, which makes it a bit easier to give it with the same taste. You can ask the chemist for the proper dose for your son. I am suffering through the same problem except my son has to see an ENT specialist. Yes pannadol is better at keeping the fever at bay, but if your son is in pain you can give a dose of nurofen too as they are completely different drugs and it might help with the inflammation in his ears. I have been down this road many a time with my daughter as well.

Good luck and I hope your son is well soon.

  3. Would he chew a chewable? (They have to be properly chewed to work well).  If he's 22lbs or more he could use those: http://askdrsears.com/html/8/t089101.asp

However I believe ibuprofen is just as effective at reducing fever and more effective for some pains.

There are also pain reducing ear drops which are non-prescription in some places.

A fever does not necessarily need to be treated. If a child is playful and comfortable, drinking plenty of fluids, and able to sleep, fever treatment is not likely to be helpful. Steps should be taken to lower a fever if the child is uncomfortable, vomiting, dehydrated, or having difficulty sleeping. The goal is to bring the temperature between about 100 and 102 degrees F -- not to eliminate the fever.

  4. Poor guy! Hope he gets better soon. But I really think that if the Panadol is making him vomit or almost vomit that that has got to be worse than taking something a little less effective. I would personally try the nurofen and monitor his temp. If his temp is under 100 then it's doing a fine job at keeping his temp down and you can forget about the panadol.

  5. Try going to a pharmacy, some offer medication flavourings to make them taste better.  Sobey's offers this as do many places.  Or you could hide it in yogurt or applesauce on a spoon.

Good luck, its not fun when they are sick :(

  6. tylenol every 6 hrs and motrin every 4 hours alternating

  7. try mixing his dose in a small bottle of formula.  it always worked for me.  most of the time the dose is so small they dont even notice
