Question:

My local flight school only offers PPL; should I go elsewhere for training?

Hi,

I'm going to begin training as a pilot and I am currently working towards building my hours towards achieving my private pilot's license at a local airport.

The problem with my airport is that the only planes available for rent are Cherokees and Cessna's from the 1960's &1970's - I'm flying OLD equipment. They don't offer anything beyond the PPL, as in they don't have multi-engine aircraft for rent available.

Is it ok for me to be learning on older aircraft, or should I be flying newer aircraft (Cessna's & Cirrus's with modern instrumentation)?

Also, is it beneficial for me to go to an airport that offers all of the certifications necessary to become a certified commercial jet pilot, or is does it not matter if I were to break up my training in different segments at different airports?

  1. I am a CFI. If you have the money go to a 4 year college aviation program, the majors all require a 4 year degree now. The age of the plane in your situation to get your PPL does not matter. You need to get a firm grip on the basics before proceeding, however stick with either a low wing Cherokee or the high wing Cessna for training. I liked the Cherokees. When you pass your check ride and get your private now start adding on different single engine types, even a tail wheel endorsement, a complex endorsement a high performance endorsement, then get Instrument then commercial before thinking about multi engine you need to be close to a 1000 hours of total flight time
