My lovebirds just recently started to tear up the newspaper in their cage is this a sign they want to mate?

I know one is male but I'm not sure about the other. also how old should a lovebird be before they mate? By the way I have had them them since Feb. and they have never torn up their paper before.

They might be doing it getting ready to mate.  Or they could be just bored. Do you provide a lot of toys for them, Lovebirds are active little guys.  I am not sure of the age. If they are old enough they probably would need a wooden nest box to build a nest in.
