  1. Power engineering deals with electrical generation, motors, power electronics (if you are lucky) and drives. Electrical engineering is a catch-all phrase to cover power, electronics and communication. It has generally come to mean the latter two fields. In the salary pecking order of electrical engineers, power engineering comes at the very bottom. Electrical drives and power electronics (closely related fields) come mid-range. The highest paid are electronics design automation engineers. In the US, expect a starting salary (after BS) of $40k - $45k, but this depends a lot on the location, and type of work, company. After MS, expect around $45k - $55k; after Ph.D, between $55k - $65k. In contrast, after a Ph.D in electronics/communication, you can expect between $75k - $100k.
