Question:

My male gerbil has a weird lump?

I've had my male gerbil for about a year now and I've noticed that his p***s has gone fairly large,it kind of looks like a tumor but there is no bleeding and he seems to get no bother with it.It's like a large rounded ball basically, there is no discharge or anything like that.I'm wondering if anyone has had a gerbil with a similar problem or knows what it could be.Also it's not a scent gland tumor,i know that's a fairly common problem in males.

thanks

  1. "Lumps or bumps could indicate a tumor, cyst, abscess, or even an area on a tail or limb that was broken, but healed."

"Neoplasms (tumors) of aged gerbils are among the most commonly reported diseases in this species.  Neoplasms of the adrenal cortex, ovary and skin appear to be the most common types.  A few of the skin tumors were from the ventral scent gland in males; one of these was malignant.  Most tumors occurred in gerbils over 2 years old."

If it isn't a scent gland problem, it sounds like your gerbil might have a benign tumor.  Benign tumors will continue to grow and eventually start stealing the nutrients from the gerbil and hindering his ability to move.  Depending on how old he is, it might be worth it to remove.

That being said, if the lump has been getting bigger, you should take your gerbil to the vet.  Most lumps and bumps that are growing or appear overnight need to be examined by a vet to determine what they are.  Additionally, most of the reasons that cause lumps require veterinary attention to take care of them.
