My maytag dryer started smoking when i was drying some clothes!!!! what happened?

your motor is burning out, literally, Unplug the unit and have it serviced immediately.

Where was the smoke coming from?

Our friends house caught fire because clogged/dirty dryer vent.

Check the entire vent system making sure it is free from any and all obstructions.

Did you make sure the lint filter was cleaned out?  It was probably one of the above, but just incase.

The belt that goes around the outside of the dryer drum is slipping badly. You'll probably have to call a repair man or you can try to replace it yourself if you have all the right tools and patience.

If it's out of warren-tee call an independent repair person. This should save you some money.
