My maytag msd 2556aew sid by side wont defrost automaticly?

refridgerator does not cool properly. A quick check revealed cooling coils in freezer frosted over and block air flow from refridgerator. I unplugged refridge and manual defrosted. Unit worked well for about one week and same problem occured. Compressor fan beneath refridgerator working. Fan in freezer working. Dust removed from compressor coils and both of refridgerator. I also check gasket on freezer and refridgerator and don't find and problems with it. I again manually defrosted freezer coils. Same problem occurred in about one weeki replaced the defroster(Heat elements with the thermostat) last week and i still have same problem Any ideas.

  2. defrost timer gone bad takes 5min to replace  and they are cheep

  3. You defrost circuit is not working. Maytags have a little circuit board in the control console (back right) that goes bad too often. They fail far more than the defrost bimetal and or the element, which very rarely go bad. Those are all that is in the defrost circuit.

It is tricky enough to do I wouldn't try to explain here. It is not hard but you kinda have to know it to get it back together correctly because it is easy to crimp the freezer thermostat as it goes through the wall or have the gears slip for the levers which have a timing notch on them to set right.

I can do it by tilting if down without pulling the whole console clear out. That makes it easier to do without disturbing too much. But it does have connectors and will pull out entirely.

Do you ever hear a buzzing sound in the refrigerator? If so you know that defrost board is bad. That is a common way they fail. That buzz is a relay not opening to turn off the compressor and turn on the defrost.

One trick, is if you hear the buzzing, turn the controls to off then back on and it shuts off and goes in to defrost. It won't come back on for about 30 minutes if it has a load of ice.

    Good Luck.

  4. Defrost timer went. Mine did too and it took 4 minutes to put a new one on.

  5. you need a defrost timer or a additive defrost control board. check out repairclinic.com for parts and how to install
