  1. because what if you go to college in some far away place like in the States across the country...then they are stuck with this horse that no one rides and it isn't worth it to buy one for a year or 2 and then sell it back to some one that isn't fair for the horse...do you really have enough for a horse?? they need vet bills saddles hay/straw grooming tools bridle halter rope and so much more!! please think about this for me it is kind of obvious but i suppose that you might not be able to see it being the one who wants it...i don't think that is fair for the poor horse to sit around while you go off to college...no one will ride him...think about responsibility...do you have 1-2 hours + for a horse each day with soccer practice and homework everyday?? This horse will be sad and miserable please don't buy a horse until you graduate from college and have your own place and the time for a horse!!!!!!!!

  2. Don't fight them on this.  There are a lot of good reasons not to own your own horse. First of all, they are very expensive to own. Whether you have "your own money" or not, at 16, you cannot afford a horse without help from your parents. Trust me, I know!

In a couple years you will likely either go off to college or move out on your own and your situation will change. You parents are probably afraid that when that happens they will be stuck with your horse. Finding a buyer these days can be very difficult. The economy is so tight that many more people are giving away or selling horses because they can no longer afford them. When you can't find a home for  a horse, the odds are that they end up at auction, being sold to slaughter. Even though horse slaughter has been banned in the U.S., buyers still attend U.S. auctions, buy horses for slaughter, and ship them to plants in Mexico or Canada.

Continue as you've been doing, riding other people's horses. Trust me, it's not a bad option, espeically at this point in your life!

  3. Horses are extremely expensive and time consuming animals.  Even though you have your own money do you really have the money to purchase the animal, food, vet care (very expensive), and any thing else that comes up?   One site say it's not too difficult to have a horse cost $5000 a year (I took out boarding since you have your own farm and presumably a stall to put it in).

On top of that, what are you going to to when you go to college?  That's only a couple of years away and horses can live 20-30 years.  Where will you be in 20 years?  Sometimes pets that seem cool at 16 are a burden when you're 25.  I'm sure your parents are thinking of how they are going to be the ones paying and taking care of a horse.

I'd suggest you do tons of research and have answers to these kinds of questions for your parents.

    Here's some sites:

Another option, and one I would recommend, is leasing a horse.  The costs are far less and it would be like "your horse."  When you lease a horse you are the only one who gets to ride it.

Here's some sites on leasing a horse:

    Hope that helps!

  4. Do you have a job?

Can you really pay for a horse, vet bills, food, equipment, and a lot more? Do you have enough time for the horse?

Your parents will be stuck with your horse in 2 or 3 years when you go off to college.

Just talk to them about every possible reason they don't want you to have one. Work for it.

    It is there decision.

    But GOOD LUCK!!!

  5. You are a proffesional of horses...What does that mean?

If you have not attended any Equine based college or University courses...nor passed all your rider levels...nor got YEARS of experience riding and training horses - I have a hard time seeing you as a pro.

    Your parents might also.

Perhaps they think like me and know that EVERY one has a lot to learn. And those that think they know everything are not ready to own a horse.

Just giving yourself a title means nada.
