My mom claimed exempt on her taxes and didn't file for years?

My mom's husband took her passport and i.d.'s and bank card?

He also took their money out of the bank. He hid them because she is leaving out of country for 2 months. I think she is scared to call the cops because they haven't filed taxes in some years, because he is lazy bum and won't get a job, and talked my mom into claiming exempt. He has threathened that he will make it so she doesn't see her family in years, meaning he will turn her over, but he will get in trouble too, won't he? I just want her to call the cops but she thinks, she will go to jail because of the taxes??? Please help.

There is a possibility that she is worrying over nothing. As a married couple filing jointly and no other dependants, the filing requirement is around $16,000.00 (for 2006 a little more for 2007 a little less for 2005) so unless she made more than that there IS no tax consequence. Either way the local police could care less about her income tax issue.   it is best that she file her returns for her sake, but no one is come knocking on her door if she does not. She can obtain other ID's easily enough. If it was a Joint account there is nothing she can do about the lost money.  Also if he did call the IRS he is an idiot because he is as liable as she is for the taxes that were not paid.

Well that's what happens if you illegally con the government out of taxes you owe.

Paying tax is not optional and there are serious consequences for not paying.  Everyone else has to pay more because people like your mother think they are above the law.

While her situation is unfortunate, I have little sympathy with people that just want to take and take, but not pay what they owe.

Who sign the form to claim "exempt"?  Your mother did.  I hope she gets caught and goes to jail.

Unless the IRS is directly involved, the police couldn't care less if your mom has not paid taxes.

Tell her to call the cops.

Your Mom needs to go on the offensive.  Her husband is nothing but a controlling low-life.  

She needs to:

1.  Take back control of her life

2.  Taker her documents from him, or at the least order new ones.

3.  Seriously evaluate whether she still loves this man.  If the answer is no, no good can come from staying with him.  She should kick his butt out on the street, or get the h**l out herself.

the local police do not report to the irs. Let your mom know that.
