  1. This is where you look for a transmission specialty shop.   Does not matter that you have a Volkswagen.   You have a car with a transmission.   Let them determine what is wrong with it.      The more places you can check out to "'see" what is wrong with it, the better the idea you will get as to what the real problem is.   Some of these mechanics have got to guess the same problem.   And that is the one that is most likely.    Time wise too on the repairs and the costs.

  2. Does the car run well?  If it isn't broke don't fix it.  If it doesn't run properly, always get a second opinion before spending such money from a reliable shop.  It is a challenge finding one so ask around--it's a jungle out there.

  3. Is there something wrong with the car? What is it they were doing to the car to determine that that is a problem?

Have they updated the transmission control module program? (the tsb was released in March)

I did some looking around and there seem to be A LOT of complaints about the automatic transmissions. Most of them have the issue with going from 2nd gear to third.

  4. find a private shop, the dealer can shove off, use yahoo local and find a nice shop near you zip code and get an estimate, DO NOT tell them what the dealer told you and DO tell them what you think might be wrong, this way you get a second opinion and a better price!

  5. You can check online to order the right part and get prices from local mechanics to install.
