There is a huge variety of coins that we have never even seen. Mom and I are really leary about just taking them in for an appraisal for fear of getting ripped off. Can anyone suggest a good way to determine the value of the many coins?

  1. You brought in politics, why?

Find a reputable coin dealer and get an appraisal, that should tell you what you have.

  2. Get an appraisal and get it on paper, but do not get rid of them!! If the dollar crashes, when obama gets in it will for sure, then you will need something to barter with.

  3. I do my own research when I get coins in on consignment. To check values..I usually do an advanced ebay search, searching for closed auction prices. That is really the appraisal right there..what they have actually sold for..NOT what people are asking.

There are also coin books and dealers will often appraise for you. Take your time though...if you are not in a big hurry, do your own legwork.
