  1. The earlier the better...I would suggest Thursday just to be beat the weekend traffic, [that's when I'm leaving] and like the first person said, do take back roads if you know them! They may take you out of the way a little bit, but you won't be sitting in hours of traffic!

Oh yeah! The earlier you leave, the better deals you'll get on gas because you know for some unfortuante reason whenever there's a storm gas companies like to jack up the prices! FILL UP NOW!

  2. If it were me I would have left yesterday. Little Rock AR is looking pretty good right now.

  3. The earlier the better, but Friday should be OK.  The worst of the traffic should be Saturday afternoon.  Keep in mind that the goal is to avoid a hurricane, not necessarily traffic.

PS - It may help to pick a route based on secondary roads - everyone takes the main highway, so it actually backs up first.

  4. Friday will be perfectly fine. TAKE BACK ROADS! It took me 5 hours to get from here to Tallulah for Katrina, and I left sunday morning (the day before the storm)

  5. I live in Chalmette!

Um my family and I are leaving either Thursday night, or early Friday.  I wish you and your mom best of luck!

    BE SAFE!

  6. If I were your mom, I would stay at home and prepare for Gustav, which is supposed to hit on Tuesday.  They may be required to evacuate, so she should probably get ready.

There's a great set of links for tracking Hurricane Gustav on http://www.USAMediaGuide.com.  You can find links to the current projected path, the National Hurricane Center, local TV and newspaper coverage, live online webcams and more.

  8. As an evacuee of Hurricane Katrina, I would suggest that your mom start preparing now for evacuation. The storm track is still in question but it looks like the gulf coast region will get it. Just tell her to have everything prepared and ready to go at least two days before the storm. West Monroe should be good because at least she will be out of the direct hit. We evacced to Natchez, Mississippi and still got some part of the storm. But good she will be leaving Chalmette. Tell her to keep a close eye on the weather reports and continue to follow the storm's track. I wish your mom well.  I, personally, could not take another hurricane so I am up in Canada but still pray for all of my friends down there. Tell her to take all back road routes if she has to wait til last minute but even those are treacherous as we found out with Katrina.

  9. i am also from chalmette...i cant leave but my husband and kids are leaving! i wish everyone the best! if it comes again i will not be coming back!

  10. Leave now...hotel rooms are starting to fill up like crazy in North Louisiana.

  11. thursday would be a bit better friday the hurricane will be more public and she'll get stuck in traffic. Id say leave thursday evening but thats just me
