My mom stole my expensive ring. How can I get it back?

This is an engagement ring worth several thousand dollars. It is mine and she has no right what so ever over it. She shouldn't be able to take it from me and she refuses to give it back. So I'm thinking of getting the police involved. What would be the wise thing to do? & also can the police even do anything about it?
