  1. Well for one thing, an education is all very well and good but when it comes to getting a job and functioning well in society, gaining social skills is a huge thing. There are many people out there with a long list of diplomas, academic achievements etc, all of them striving to get a good job. The difference between competing for a job and actually getting one can be the quality of your character, how many contacts (people you know who can help you) you have and how well you deal with people. There's no doubt that study is important but having a well rounded character (developing physically, mentally, emotionally) is also very important.

There are some things that you simply can't learn by studying a text book, practical experience is also important and moreover if you simply concentrate on study and nothing else there's a good chance of burning out. I took 5 subjects (where most struggle with 4) last semester and it's still having a really bad effect on me. If you make your grades the center of your life it can really lead to self confidence problems, plus good friends are useful as sounding boards (you have any doubts about your school work, you can ask for their opinion) and when studying together. School is one of the most important places for meeting people, if you don't do other activities outside of school it can be quite the isolating experience.

  2. Yes you do go to school to get a good education and that is your main purpose in going .

However, a part of your education is to learn how to socialize and make friends.  This is a learned thing and the only way to learn how to be social and make friends is to be around people.

I think your mom is part right and part wrong.  Did she not have friends growing up?  I bet she did.

Keep your grades up, if you are falling behide on a subject, seek help now.  Don't wait until you get so far behind that it will be hard to catch up.

When you receive a test paper back and you have missed something, don't just let it go, find out why you missed it and what the correct answer is.

Your studies should come before your friends.  If you are not doing well in school, I can understand why your mom said what she did.

    Blessings

  3. you should also want to take your friends advice.

  4. School is one of the best places for learning and development - mentally, socially and intellectually. Making friends in school can help to develop our social skills and increase our self-esteem but of course our main objective why we go to school is to acquire knowledge academically. And it can only achieve through serious studies.
