  1. The next time she says what's the matter with you tell her "I'm just shy and it doesn't help when you say something's wrong with me!"

  2. Having been an almost lethally shy person for so much of my life I've got to say that there is a difference between being shy and being unfriendly.  If you're so shy that you can't even respond to other people with a smile then maybe what you need to say to your mom is that you would like some help.  Ask her to help you find clubs for any interests you have or some sort of speaking group to help you learn to deal with your fears.

For me, being shy was not wanting to be embarassed about anything.  I've learned now that most people are so worried about what they're saying and doing that they are just not paying that much attention to what I'm saying and doing.  And even when they are, the people who matter know that every once in a while everyone makes a mistake.  I wish I would have known that way back in high school.  It would have made the entire 4 years much more enjoyable.
