  1. Try either a dish or pan filled slightly with either apple cider vinegar or dawn dish detergent. She can cover it with cellophane and punch small holes into the top. That way they can get in but not out. These two substances are suppose to attract the fruit fly but they cannot get out once they land. Because their wings are wet and too heavy. Eventually they drown.

I've also tried with a little success using fruit in a cellophane covered cup or bowl. Such as a strawberry or banana.

  2. I had this problem earlier this year at my home. The only thing

that worked for me was to go to my local Ace Hdwre and get

these nontoxic fruit fly traps.  They look like a pretty lantern or something but they're made so that the flies can't get back out once they go in.  They have this "bait" you mix with water.

Any way, I tried everything, and this is the one thing that worked -- It's nontoxic, not too expensive, and it's pretty.

  3. Yuck! I had a major infestation of fruit flies two years ago and that is something I will never forget!

I got rid of the pests by setting out saucers of Kool Aid and dish soap mixed with water. I covered shallow dishes of both tightly with plastic wrap and then poked tiny holes in the top so the things couldn't crawl back out. I had the most luck with the soap & water...when it was stirred quickly and allowed to make lots of suds. The flies get stuck in the bubbles and can't get out The problem is *keeping* the mixture full of bubbles while stirring it as little as possible.

It's important to change the water at least once/day. Unless you are putting a piece of fresh fruit (banana, pineapple or canteloupe) in a dish - you can change that every other day. The key is to use "stinky" fruit that has an odor so it attracts the flies - and to cover it with the plastic wrap (with holes poked in it) so they can get in but can't get back out.

I really hope your mom has the patience to get rid of the flies - they are so obnoxious and seem to multiply right before your eyes! ;)
