Question:

My mother in law is expirencing problems with her ceramics. She is using underglaze paint and then glazing it

She is firing it in her own kelm. when she uses the glaze the paint doest stay put and parts of her work are faded or smeared. Anyone know what she is doing wrong? Is she skipping a step? Any tips or advice? And thanks for the help she is getting discouraged.

  1. By underglaze, do you mean a bisque underglaze, or an underglaze designed for detail work on greenware? Smearing is usually a sign that the underglaze has not fully dried before the glaze has been applied, or that the person brushing it on has been brushing too hard. Fading could be a sign that the underglaze wasn't applied heavily enough, it was fired to the wrong temperature, it isn't compatible with the clay body, or dozens of other answers. Your best bet is to contact the company that manufactures the glaze and underglaze. They'll be able to give you an answer and tell you what's wrong.


  2. Do an engobe and glaze on that.
