My motorcycle calls for 20w40 oil.. is it that big of a deal to use 20w50? both oils are for a 4 stroke v twin

My motorcycle calls for 20w40 oil.. is it that big of a deal to use 20w50? both oils are for a 4 stroke v twin

  1. it won't hurt a thing but 10w40 would be closer to 20w40. 10w40 and 20w40 at operating temperature are the same. when these two oils are cold then the 10w40 will be just a little thinner than the 20w40.


  2. No problem.  I have a hard time finding 20w40 also.  I use Castrol 20w50 synthetic without any problems.  I guess about the best is Royal Purple synthetic.  Switching to that next change.

  3. No big deal.  Some folks claim heavier oil makes shifting a little slower, but I've never noticed any difference.
