It'll run, but cough, and slow the revs, cough again, slow the revs more and eventually die.

It's a yamaha sr185, what could it be?

  1. First take the fuel hose from the carburetor and make sure fuel is flowing ok. If it is, then remove the air cleaner and make sure it's clean and in good condition. if that's ok, then remove the carby and clean the jets and the galleries. Look closely at the float needle, and look for a ring near the point. If there is, then replace the needle. Also check that the inlet manifold is still soft. If it;s hard then replace it. Check also that the seal between the manifold and cylinder is good. If all that fails, it may be an electrical fault.

  2. some kind of air flow restriction, fuel lines, fuel filter, air filter?

  3. Check the valve adjustment.

Tight or leaking valves will allow the fuel to blow back through the intake valve, or cause a back-fire through the intake/exhaust valves.

  4. Perhaps it has a cold, does it have a high temperature?
