Question:

My mouse is pregnant and I've got a few questions?

So I bought a mouse a few weeks ago. They were selling her as a feeder mouse so they had all the males and females together. I guess she had been pregnant when I bought her because she recently started getting really fat really quickly the past few days. I have a couple of other female mice that I'm going to have to separate her from so she can give birth but the only other thing I can put her in is like 3 gallon tank. When am I allowed to place her and the babies with the other mice? Also I've been trying to find out when males can begin breeding, but I'm finding different answers. When do males develop enough so they can breed? Because I don't want any of my mice getting pregnant anymore. One last question, when can I separate them from their mother? I'm planning to just give them to the pet store because I don't have room for them.

  1. the babies should be weened in about 4 weeks so they can be taken from their mother after then. You should take the males out when they are between 4 and 5 weeks old because they can start breeding at around 5-6 weeks old.

  2. If all the females are getting along, you don't necessarily have to separate the pregnant one.  The other females will help raise the babies and give mom a break.

As other posters have said, they wean at about 28 days, and you'll need to take the boys out then.  That's also the time you can take any you won't be keeping back to the pet store.

They'll be born naked with their eyes closed.  They'll get pigment in their skin at about 4 or 5 days old, they'll get furry at about 7-8 days old (and it's common for them to be fairly dandruffy when the fur is coming in for the first time) and they'll open their eyes at about 12 days old.

At about 12 days old, also, is the best time to figure out which are boys and which are girls.  Look at mom's belly at that time, and you shoudl be able to see her nipples all around the perimeter.  Then check each baby's belly--unlike with people, only the girls will have nipples.  It's a good idea to know how many boys you have, because by about 15 days old they usually have enough fur on their bellies it gets very hard to tell until the boys are really developed--which can be more like 5 weeks.

Typically the males can breed at about 6 weeks old, although occasionally it's between 5 and 6 weeks old, so that 28-30th day is something to mark on the calendar.

If you start holding the babies in a pile in your hands for about an hour every evening while you watch TV or something, starting when they're about a week old, they'll be tame and make very good pets later.  But don't disturb the nest at all until they're at least 4 days old, and don't clean the cage until they're about 2 weeks old.

  3. awww i want mice in a tank

    they're cute and cuddely :)

  4. the males become mature at about 36 days. seperat tthem from mom when they are about 28 days old. the mom and litter can join the others as soon as their eyes are open andthey can run around
