Question:

My mum has a Wasps nest right by her front door, are the council responsible for removing it ?

My mum lives in a council house, she has a Wasps nest right by her front door, it is actually nestled within the canopy of the house. My little nephew has already been stung so my mum contacted the local authorities to ask that they come out & remove it. She was told she would have to pay to have it moved by pest control else she could buy sprays & attempt to get rid of them herself. Surely if it's council property they should come & remove it free of charge, especially when people are getting stung too. Anyone got any suggestions or recommendations please ?

  1. yes and no , if the council owns the house i personally think yes, as it wasps i think it would be best just to get removed first, as they can give nasty stings, make sure you keep receipt's and get in contact with the owner i think it also just depends on the person, but also there's nothing wrong with the house so i don't think they will HAVE too

    if that all makes sense

  2. Sorry but pest control is only the councils responsibility on PUBLIC property. although its a council house its Private property.

its like asking the council to keep the house clean because its a council house, its the responsibility of the occupant to keep places cleaned and general day to day maintenance/decoration.

the council is only responsible for insuring the building and Major works such as new roof etc.

that's why council rents are so cheap you are supposed to maintain and look after the house yourselves.

Wasp nest removal is around £25 from pest companies but you cannot buy the proper chemicals to do it yourself as they are poisonous and restricted. the only DIY option is to douse the are in FLY killer at night when the wasps are not active.

If other people are being stung the its your mother who can get sued if you neighbours are the suing type!

  3. hit it with a big stick and run like f***

  4. Different councils have different policies and rules. Our council came out to remove a wasp nest from my mother in-laws, private house, the first call was free and she was told a return trip would incur a cost but as she was a pensioner it would be minimal.

Contact your council again and tell them the importance of the situation on health and safety grounds.

  5. i'm a person who likes to push or hold up to the rules. but it cost less then $5 to purchase a can of wasp spray plus $5 if you have a gas guzzling car or truck, plus your time which would take 30 sec. so even if you are a over paid government employee. your only out $20 i think it is a cheep price to pay so you don't have to hear your little nephew scream and cry after being stung. PLEASE spay after the sun goes down and use half the can.

  6. Look at your local council website.  All of them charge for removing wasp nests but some don''t charge (see link) people on benefits / JSA / disability.

All advise not to attempt to dislodge a nest without protective clothing.

At the end of Autumn, the wasps will abandon the nest.  Can you wait that long?  Probably not if it's in the doorway.

  7. Unfortunately the council will not remove it free of charge even though it is their property. I had a wasps nest above my front door and my daughter got badly stung . I ended up paying the council to remove them as they were cheaper than other pest control companies, and sprays do not work that well on removing the nest.

  8. She can get Wasp Nest Destroyer from B&Q or most garden centres. You just put the powder near the entrance to the nest and the wasps carry it into the nest on their legs and it kills the queen.Once she is dead they will all abandon the nest.

  9. There are not alot of wasps or bees about this year,if you ring a bee keeper I bet he will be glad to get them.free

  10. The council does provide pest control services to all residents in its area. I do not know if tenants get these services for free but I paid £60 to my local council about 3 years ago to have one in my back garden dealt with, that was cheaper than going private but then you wait a little longer for the job to be done.

  11. sorry

  12. If it is a council house or a housing association house then the council should remove it.

I would give the environmental health dept at the council a call. State you are allergic to them.

    Oh and ignore red!!!

  13. Yes it is your local councils responsibility if she is renting from them.

Keep calling them! Tell them it's a health risk and you'll report it if something isn't done.  Or... tell them someone in your family has a sever allergy and it's life threatening!

  14. yes the council should remove it

  15. I agree with rest they should remove it, but you could also buy a can of spray from the Hardware store and spray it yourself to avoid being stung in the mean time .

  16. Sorry there but its got nothing to do with the council. The thing to do is buy a can of wasp nest killer, its a foam spray that sticks to the nest.

A can costs about a fiver compaired with local authorities at about £50.

Use the foam at night when all the wasps are in the nest.

  17. if its a council house they probably should move it!

  18. No it is your responsibility, suggest you contact your local beekeepers society,(yellow pages) they will have a member out to destroy it. Cheaper than the council as well.

  19. The Council are wrong.  It is the Landlord's responsibility to deal with pest infestations.  If they won't be persuaded, your mother should pay to have the nest removed and claim the cost from the Council through the small claims court.  She could also claim damages for the inconvenience caused by their refusal to deal with the problem.

  20. why cant she get rid of it herself? she needs free housing and cant even look after it herself? what is she- disabled or retarded? spray something into the hole of the nest then hit it with a newspaper. worked for me.

  21. I dont think they are to be honest.

Poor petrol over it and they will sooon leave

  22. They should remove it, they are the owner of the property therefore are responsible, therefore threaten to sue.

  23. my mum had a wasps nest in the roof of her council house last summer.

after 4 weeks of constant complaining they actually paid for the pest control service to remove it.

just keep on complaining every day. prove she cant afford to pay pest control to come out

refuse to pay rent untill they do something about it and let them know that you wont be paying for the weeks that you still have a wasp nest ruining your home.

  24. Yes call your local Environmental Health Department, they should send an exterminator out to remedy the problem.

    Good Luck. X :-)

  25. very simply "yes" try environmental health dept.

  26. I think they used to remove these nests free of charge but no longer.  Unfortunately she will have to fork out herself for it as technically, there is nothing wrong with the house as such and the fact the wasps have nested there is not the Council's responsibility.

    Sorry.

  27. maybe, but get a pressure washer hook it up and spray that sucker down and when it falls just stomp on it making sure the bees are dead, wear a jacket and jeans when you do this just incase u get stung
