I am 23, a Hong Kong guy. I've been studying in Australia for 6 years. Besides, I've been studying in Britain as an exchange student for 6 month, in a British university.

We watched the Beijing Olympic closing ceremony on TV, including British 2012 London handover show in the ceremony. When Leona Lewis, David Beckham and Jimmy Page appeared on screen, she said she can't relate to these people. She asked " What the f*** are these people ? " I said " That guy is Beckham. " She said , " For the girl who was playing violin next to Beckham, her pants are too short. Too short! Is this a p**n show made by London people ? That violinist should wear Chinese clothes. This is Olympic cloing ceremony. Wearing pants is not respectful! This is c*ap ! What a striptease show ! "

She said " The female violin player shows there's no culure in Britain. her pants are too short. Just like a p**n star "

I think my Chinese mum is culturally intolerant. Do you agree or disagree? Why do you think so ?

  1. I think your mother is secretly upset that you're going to a British school.

  2. The fact is they only had 8 minutes to showcase there efforts and beckham is a world icon and is from london, leona lewis is very popular in a lot of countries at the moment and jimmy page is one of the greatest guitarists ever.As for the pants nothing wrong with showing some leg after all some of the chinese women had very short skirts on as well.As for being like a p**n star well it's not quite like the ones i've seen but each to there own.

  3. I wonder why the thumbs down for the first answer. I think your mother might be afraid that you would be attracted to this type of girl (instead of a girl from your own culture). Some cultural intolerance is to be expected. You can't expect people to accept everything about all people. It just wouldn't be natural.

  4. I would not go as far as labeling your mother "culturally intolerant." If she was, you wouldn't be in Australia. It does appear she 1) is older than you, so she's not familiar with these British "stars," and 2) she sees things through the culture in which she was raised. You should try to enlighten here ... a little bit at a time. Rent her the DVD "Bend it Like Beckam" for a start - that's a good cultureal eye-opener.

  5. i dont understand what your trying to say? sorry, can you be specific?

  6. i'd call her "culturally ignorant".
