my mum is coming to watch me ride for the first time tomorrow on my new horse. (i have to ride in a field as there is no school)my horse is really nice to ride apart from 2 things. 1) when we head back to the yard she decieds to blot to get back to her stable buddy but that i can handle. my really questions is. when i canter she is sooo bouncy because she has these boots on her front hoofs (like trainers) because she has arthritis also she gets really frisky in canter. how can i keep her calm while cantering so i can sit 2 her bouncy canter? i dont want to embarres myself infrount of my mum.

  1. Boots will not make a horse frisky!

What you need to do is in walk - preferably someone lunging or leading you is to hold on to the front of the saddle, then take your legs as far away from the saddle and horse's sides as possible (bit undignified I know, but try and see the difference it makes to your seat), then bring your legs down and back as far as you can.  You should be now sitting on your seat bones and if someone was to take the horse away from under you, apart from a slight bend in your leg you should be able to stand.

Practise this a few times and then move on to doing it in trot.  Then in canter.  Then you will find you are sitting much deeper in the saddle.  Then you can slow the canter by slowing your seat - you know when the seat rocks backwards and forwards, well keep your leg on firmly but quietly but slow that rocking and the horse will automatically come to your rythm.

Do not immediately grab his mouth.  Horses naturally tense up when you tense up and will try to get away from the extra pressure on the mouth - by running faster.  You can never fight a horse this way, he is stronger.

It will take practice, but you will get there.

Good luck.  And honestly, it is not the boots!

  2. Your mum should give you support anyway but with my horse when she's cantering i lean back slightly and to very small half halts and she goes into a steady canter. That's all i need to do so hopefully it will work for you!

    Good Luck!

  3. dont worry about she is your mom in horse riding i think if people want to criticize they should be the ones riding doing what you are and you be the one on the ground critizing them

  4. Don't worry about it! The more you worry, your horse will pick it up and get even more excited!

    1) Instead of riding back to the yard, lead her in her bridle. This way you've got better control over him! If possible, go a different way back to the yard so that your horse doesn't recognize it and bolt immediately.

    2) When cantering, do lots of half-halts to keep her steady. This way you'll be slowing your horse down without loosing impulsion! (If you don't know how to do a half-halt, just gently give and take once or twice with your outside rein. You horse should get the picture!

    Good luck x

  5. you shouldn't have to worry because no matter what your mom should be proud of you

  6. your mom will be proud of you no matter what... but about the horse make sure that you are calm when you are on her... i have had the same problem out of my horse make sure you let her now who the boss is. because if she thinks that she is in controll she is goin to walk all over you and you cant let that happen.. be calm with her and get her into some more trainin classes and that will help you out

  7. just pretend like shes not there, when my mum watches me i try to ride well even though ma mum doesnt tell me what to do but still, try and do what i do.

  8. I do not understand? How do boots make a horses canter bouncy? I ride with boots? Well learn the rythem of the canter...the key is to move with the horse.

  9. If you haven't been riding her long, then it's ok. It's takes awhile to figure out a horses quircks and learn to deal with them. But just stay calm. That's all I can think of for now. I really hope this helps. But just rember, it's just another lesson. It's you and your horse.

  10. hi

your mum will just be proud because you can ride. Don't be worried. aslong as you try.......that's what matters!

  11. Dont worry about a problem like that!!!! All you need to do is warm your horse up. Get rid of the fidgets. Just ride her at a canter for a while to calm her down. If she doesnt become smooth after a while, I would just accept the way she is and try to get in time with her bounces.

  12. Unless your mom is a trainer or instructor she won't really know if its good or bad and she will be proud of you no matter what. She is your mom... it isn't a show there are no judges so relax and have fun!!!

  13. do not be worry

  14. I know what thats like. My parents came to watch me in my tennis match and I got nervous and played bad.

Thing is, just pretend theyre not there. People say it all the time but really, just do it. Just feel confident in your riding and dont stress or anything.

  15. i don't know how to control the horse..but i have to tell you...your mum will be SO proud that you are even riding a horse...no matter what you do...she will love it & will tell all of her friends...so don't worry - she will not be embarrassed!!
