Do I have to dead head them or just let them grow off?

  1. I usually cut my mums back, when the flowers dry up(about half of the plant) and fertilize(systemic rose food) give them some sun and they pop back as pretty as they started. good luck

  2. I have noticed that my mums don't do well in the shade.  I love to put them on the porch but there is not enough sunlight.  The blooms seem to  dry up, but I think they are just dying.  You can try cutting the  blooms off and putting the plant back in the sun.   If that is indeed the problem, they should perk up  and you may get a sporadic second growth.  On the other hand, you may just want to start over again with some new plants since it's still early in the season.

If they are in the sun, they do take a lot of water because they are probably root bound.  You can take them out, disturb the roots some (pull the roots gently apart or make three slits in the root ball with a knife) and re-pot them in the next size up container, pinch back the blooms and see what happens.

    Good luck

  3. It all depends...

    ...on what "they" are, exactly.
