My surname in Irish is Ó Bróic but cause I'm a girl it's Úi Bróic?

Am I right or does it stay Ó Bróic?

Ó Bróic means "grandson of Bróic" so you could also use

Ní Bhróic means "daughter of grandson of Bróic"

Ní is a shortened form of Iníon Uí.

Uí Bhróic means "of the grandson of" or just "of Bhróic".

Ní is specifically for daughters.

(If it was Mac Bhróic you would use Nic)

Traditionally you can be either "Ní Bhróic" for "Miss Ó Bróic" or "Bean Uí Bhróic" for "Mrs Ó Bróic" (i.e. "wife of O Bróic").

Incidentally, both Uí and Ní lenite (put the h behind the consonant coming after).

Nowadays many women prefer less sexist surnames and instead simply use "Ó Bróic", as a male of the family would, and maybe just "Uí Bhróic" for "Mrs Ó Bróic" (i.e. "of Ó Bróic"). There's about as much argument about this as in Irish as about Mrs/Miss/Ms in English and just as many people who find both versions acceptable.

So in direct answer to your question, traditionally you're Ní Bhróic but nobody will object if you say Uí Bhróic or even Ó Bróic.
