My name is currently on the lease at my old apartment, will that hinder me from getting another apartment?

I used to cohabitate with this girl in a two bedroom apartment. Unfortunately, we began to have problem when she refused to pay her half of the bills. Although, I had not been staying at the apartment, I still chose to pay my half. Eventually, things got so bad that I had to get the police involved. Both the police and leaser agreed that it would be in my best interest to leave the apartment altogether. I went to the office and attempted to have my name removed from the lease since my roommate had informed me that she could take care of things on her own. The only thing wrong with that is that I needed her consent and her signature for my name to be cleared from the lease. She refused to sign the form which forces my name to be stuck on the lease although I no longer live in the apartment. I moved my things out on July 30, 2008. Her threats continued and I even had to file a warrant on her for harassing and threatening me. She broke the lease by secretly moving out without informing the leaser and without paying any of the bills. I attempted to take her to small claims court but due to the fact that she illegally moved out of the apartment and quit her job, I don't have an address on her anymore. This matter is still unresolved and I need some kind of advice on how to go about this situation. Please help me because I would like to move into my own apartment asap!

  1. I advise you to get legal help because if that girl suddenly cannot pay the rent or whatever, then you'll be held responsible... I would NOT get another apartment if I were you until you get removed off the lease

  2. it probably won't hinder you or show up in LL's search

you may be sued by old LL though, and that will show up, as will your filing against old roomie. . .because legally with your name on lease they can come after you. . . .

be sure you have some good references, proof of employment and down payment/security ready

  3. .   It won't hinder you.  Go ahead.

  4. Your new landlold will not know about this lease.
