Will I be held liable for the debts on her cards? I never applied for these cards, she just had them issue me cards from her account with my name on them. I have used the cards however.

  1. never share credit cards with your girlfriend! gosh ur stupid. u guys are not even married yet she can break up with you and your the ine who is going to be bankrupt

  2. Like AMBY said if your only a authorized user there is nothing they can do if on the other hand your a joint user then you will be responsible for the debt.

Get a copy of your credit report and look under the credit card company's name on the left side there will either be a "A" or a "J" if it's an "A" your in the clear if it's a "J" your stuck.

  3. You used the cards, and your name is on them.

    Therefore, you owe the money.

  4. It depends....Are you just authorized to use the cards, or is it a joint credit card account? If everything is in her name and you just have a card, and are listed as a card user, they cannot hold you liable. If you are on the account as well, as a joint cardholder, then yes, they can hold you liable.

  5. It is possible that the credit card companies might go after you for payment even though you are an "authorized user" but they have no real power to garnish your wages or take legal action other than to maybe have you pay any charges that you personally signed for. There are two types of bankruptcy... repayment and complete discharge. This is decided by a trustee and attorney. Your GF will have no control over who gets paid and how much. Bankruptcy is a legal process and left into the hands of the attorney and trustee so it's basically a waiting game after the filing. You are NOT to use any of those cards or you might just blow her chances for bankruptcy if she even qualifies. Because bankruptcy stays on record for 10 years, it should be a last resort. You might want to suggest a fee-free consumer counseling management plan for her to look into. The site below is approved:
