If you want to do them yourself, there are lots of software alternatives.  Do a google search for making invitations.  Personally, I think it would be better if you 2 did them together.  Messier, more time consuming, but more fun.  Go to the dollar store, buy construction paper, some stickers, a costume boa with feathers, find a cookie cutter in a "girlie" theme, like a ballerina.  Begin tracing, cutting, and pasting.  If you want, you can do a simple word file with the necessary "time, date" kind of data, and glue it to the back.  Have fun with this.

I just made formal (but fun, for a beach wedding) invitations for $50 under what the bride was wanting to spend. I can work with you quickly and easily to get you what you and your niece are wanting for the price you want to pay, as well! Birthday invitations would probably cost a tad over a dollar a piece, depending on what additions you chose.
