Question:

My neighbor suggested a handicapped woman as a mate. Was this a good reason?

He said that it is a good choice since if they have a genetic problem that they won't want to pass it on to children..thus won't want any. He also said that if it isn't something too severe that it is like getting a good piece of furniture at a discount - sort of like a scratch and dent sale since the handicap turns off most suitors and makes the woman less demanding.....is this good advice?

  1. Are you for real? I think your attitude to these people may get in the way of developing a good friendship....don't think that you are better than them....everyone is so-called "scratched and dented"...some on the inside, some only the exterior....

  2. Good grief.  You aren't buying a cow. You are choosing a life partner. It doesn't matter if she's got a handicap or not. The important thing is to know if you and she will be best friends your whole life. Do you have compatible goals? Do you have compatible values? Are  your backgrounds similar (or are you both flexible enough to weather the differences)? I have to tell you, looks are not enough to last a lifetime. Neither is s*x. There's a lot more to marriage than that. It's smart to look beyond looks, that's true. But if you are marrying because you want someone less demanding - boy are you in for a shock! Blind people, deaf people, lame people, obese people, anorexic people, people with cleft palates, people with cerebral palsy, people in wheelchairs, beautiful people, poor people, people without limbs  - they are all PEOPLE. You can't fit them in any kind of little box and label them. They are as fascinating, varied, heroic, frightened, happy, morose and definitely as complicated as any one else.

  3. Are you desperate?

  4. No, it is poor advice. It is devoid of emotional connection necessary in a lasting relation and reeks of stereotyping and taking advantage of handicapping conditions.

If you need companionship which is less demanding, get a goldfish.
