Question:

My neighbor volunatarily fixed my garage door. Do I offer cash, a giftcard...what?

By fixing my garage door, my neighbor saved me the cost of a new garage door plus the installation. So, he saved me at least $600. I want to pay him somehow (even though he will not expect anything in return), but I am not sure what the appropriate etiquette is. Any suggestions would be great!

  1. What would you like if you did the same deed for some one else?

  2. Send him a gift with a thanks card.

  3. Have a cook out and invite his family! Ask how they like rib eye's or NY strips!

Be sure to let him know if he needs help with anything you will be more than happy to help.

  4. I'd invite him over for a nice meal and sincerely thank him.  Paying him would probably insult him.

  5. Dose he drink if so get him a good quantity of it as pay back .  Have a steak BBQ for him and his family . These things are not considered paying him . Also start being a helpful neighbor your self .

  6. It's a sad commentary on our times if the neighborly thing to do is purchase some kind of gift.

A true neighbor is someone that is there when you need them. Your neighbor had skills and a few minutes time. A sincere thanks is all he expects.

If your a good neighbor there are all kinds of opportunities for help each other out. Picking up the mail when he's out of town, giving him a jump when his battery dies etc, etc.

After Katrina, even before they realized that the government wasen't go to show up, anybody with a boat was picking his neighbors off their roof without any expectation of a gift card.

    That's what neighbors do.

  7. Sounds like a great neighbor.  He must be a handyman type.  Check out what tool he doesn't have and won't buy for himself but really wants.

  8. I would give a gift card to a place you may know he likes. Or if you see that he is interested in washing his car every weekend & keeping it clean, buy a bucket full of car supplies ( soap, wax, etc...) & leave it with a nice card. Cash seems to much like you are hiring him on as a handy man.

  9. Bake him a cake and give him a thank-you card.

  10. Be a friend, say thanks, and offer a gift but if your neighbor repaired it as a friend he'll just be satified with a hand shake.  I always lend a helping hand and never accept anything but a thanks, as we all should.

  11. As a man from the "Old School" Southern US, nothing says 'Thank You' better than FOOD! Fix him a big platter of fried chicken with potato salad, or throw a bar be que!

My Mama always said the way to a man's heart is through his stomach! LOL

  12. Give him a home made cake or a six pack or something and say thanks I know its not enough but you won't let me pay you, but remember if there is ever anything I can do to give you a helping hand please know I owe you one and let me help.

  13. Are you sure that he saved you that much money? Surely, HE didn't mention to you that what he did was more than just a friendly neighborly gift to you worth what HE thought was equivalent to what it would have cost you if you had to have called out a repair person to do the job.

I think that what he did was something he knew he could do easily, and he really LOVES to FIX THINGS.  I think that he would feel overly embarrassed if you did more than THANK him sincerely and ask if there was anything YOU might do for him -- such as, give him a new (reasonably priced) working tool he might be missing.  If he replys with "No, no, nothing, please!" -- let it go with your sincere "Thank You!"

  14. I don't know how it works where you are, but around here, we charge a 12 pack of beer per job for neighbors, with the stipulation that we drink it together when the project is complete.

  15. Give him a gift card to somewhere nice to eat out.You know he can take his wife out or girlfriend..and enjoy himself as well.
