  1. you could just give him a small trinket.  Or you could take him out to lunch or breakfast.  I think he would appreciate anything.

  2. Yellow Fever and Hepititus shots are a thought.

  3. If he doesn't speak Chinese, then a Mandarin Language book, or pocket translator.  Or maybe a camera or journal so he can keep record of his time spent there.

  4. Get him a pocket-translator.  Or, make him some of his favorite foods or even pack some of his favorite foods.  You can get basically everything in Beijing, but it is A LOT  more expensive if its something like tortilla chips, salsa, cheese, even tomato sauce.  (an 8oz can of tomato sauce is like $1.50, relatively cheap, but compared to the states, its like 5times the price) so, if he likes chips and salsa, I would suggest packing him some tortilla chips and salsa.  It;s really hard to find good mexican food in beijing, so if he likes mexican food, take him out for dinner before he leaves.  you can get just aboiut anything (mediterranean, italian, turkish, middle eastern, etc, etc) but I ahve yet to find a good mexican restaurant.
