My nephew locked himself in a room with a lock that turns on the inside and no lock on the outside. Help?

There's a hole on the outside part of the handle and my father said I should be able to just push the lock mechanism inside to unlock it. After an hour of fiddling, I don't think it's working. How can I get in?

  1. If it is a push button lock, you can insert the end of a wire hanger in and push the button and unlock. If it is a turn k**b int he back of the  door handle, try using an Allen.hex key wrench. These usually require a special key that comes with the lock set. You should be able to open it with an Allen wrench. If not, remove the bolts from the handle itself if on your side.

You can get extra "keys" for these locks at your local hardware "depot".

    Good Luck!

  2. The "lock" is may be stuck, the little hole is operated simply by pushing, do not try to twist it. If that does not work you could try to remove the pins from the hinges.

  3. You should be able to stick something stiff and small enough to fit the hole in to that little opening and push in to unlock the door. Try a small screwdriver or an Allen wrench.

  4. Is your  nephew still in there. If you cant open the lock then just s***w the door off.

  5. You should be able to push something hard into that hole to unlock the door.  Somethimes a little twist on the handle can do it.

If not, are the hinges on your side.  You could take them off.

You should be able to take the handle off.  Once you do that, you can operate the lock mechanism with a screwdriver.

Of course, if you can get your nephew to turn the handle or lock, that would work, too.

  6. We used to use wire hangers to unlock those. Of course, it's kind of hard to find wire hangers anymore...lol. You have to use something long and thin and stiff like that though. A paperclip might work, but if the lock is jammed, it would probably just bend it. A very thin screwdriver would be good if you had one. If you can feel it hitting something in the back, then push hard, but if you can't get it to budge it might be stuck.

If you have any WD40 in the house you can try putting some of that in the hole and then trying again. This might work. If not then you might have to take the k**b itself off if you can.

Other than that, you might just have to check with your father again, he'll be able to tell you other things you are allowed to do or he will call a locksmith to get it open.

    Good luck.
