  1. Trafic speeds and last mile capacity are correlated and are at the heart of the issue.

If you are on Dial up - upgrade to broadband.

If you are on Broadband - Upgrade to Mpls.

if you are on Mpls  upgrade to ethernet last mile on 1:4 sharing.

If you are on an ethernet last mile, upgrade to dedicated LL.

  2. Slow is a relative term... How slow is slow?

    First, Test your speed:

    http://www.calcuttatelephones.com/bandwi...

What speed did you subscribe for?:

    Dial-up - 56 Kbps maximum

    BroadBand - 256Kbps,  1 Mbps , or 2Mbps

If you only have 56Kbps dial-up modem service, then slow is all you get..... relatively speaking.

If you are subscribed to 1 or 2 Mbps broadband service, then how fast does the SpeedTests show?

Is it in the ball-park to what you subscribed for?

Even if you are getting only half the broadband speed you subscribed for, it may be suitable for most situations.

But, if you are a heavy file, video, music, down loader, then top speed may be an issue. Either, upgrade to faster service, or call BSNL Customer Service and complain that you are not getting data speed you are paying for.

Remember, speed they advertise are only "best  case" speeds, which are rarely attainable (it's all about marketing).

I am subscribed to 256/128 Kbps cable Internet LiteSpeed.  Most people consider that a slow connection.

But, I do a lot of surfing, I use Skype, InPhonex, CallCentric, and various other VoIP providers.... and I get by just  fine.  Sure faster would be better... but 256 Kbps service works fine and I get by OK.

But, if you are truly getting far less than you are paying for, call BSNL Customer Service and inquire.

  3. I would goto http://www.dslreports.com

they can show you tools and tweaks to speed up your connection if there are any issues on your end.

  4. There are variuos reasons for your internet to be slow...

Probably, you are using dial-up connection which is very very slow here in india...

You can speed up you inter by 20% by this method:

Go to Run in Start Menu

    Type "gpedit.msc", without the quotes

In the left panel, go to Computer configuration>>Administrative templates>>Network>>QoS Packet Scheduler

Enable the "Limit Reservable Bandwith" and set it to 0%

Apply the settings and restart you computer!

If your Internt Speed has a cap, it is impossible to increase it, untill you are into hardcore hacking...

Also try contacting BSNL...They have really improved their services nowadays...
