Question:

My new External hard drive is not working?

I have plugged in my USB external hard drive into every computer in my house, double-triple checked every plug-in cord, and every single time my USB drive does not show up on any computer. I'm curious if someone has dropped the utility because I noticed one of the plug-in USB cords does not "plug-in" all the way like the other cord does.

Ideas on what I should do?

  1. Right click on My Computer, select Manage, select Disk Management. If your external hard drive is connected, then it should show up. If you can see it... right click and Format.  If this is not the case. It could be the USB cord. I am not a guru but, i know enough to troubleshoot. Hope this helps.

  2. When you go to the Device Manager under Disk Drives, does the external Hard Drive shows up as a "USB Device"?  Are you connecting it to a USB port in the front or the back of the computer?  This can sometimes make a difference so try a USB port in the back of the computer.
