My new Samsung has 780p and it's a 40inch LCD TV. And with certain scenes from non HD shows or even playing a DVD on my non HD/Bluray DVDplayer it looks horrible! Like alot of the picture is not sharp and looks worse than my old normal TV set. Whats the deal? Should I have more resolution on a 40" TV?

  1. It's normal. The reason why it looks horrible is because the standard cable doesn't support HDTV. ONLY HD cables supports HDTV because both are hi-def.

    -I have 38'' Philips HDTV/LCD with 768P.

PS It will help if you use HDMI cable too.

  2. This is normal....when going from a standard def tv to high def tv you are magnifying the level of detail...so when you look at the highly compressed and pixelated images on standard def programming on a standard def tv the level of detail is not that high so you don't really notice all the flaws, but on a high def tv where the level of detail is much higher those flaws are magnified and much more noticeable.

So the picture on tv programs and dvd has always been the same, the only change is the level of detail with which you see all those flaws.

  3. Non HD programming will look like it does on a normal TV.

Get a digital box that shows HD programming, you'll be happy.

    Btw its 720p.

You might also want to look into HDMI cables.

  4. the other answers are right.  but my question is this.

What input are you using?  can you try the svideo or component input ?  you should be able to get a better pic with either input.  the regular video input is just too poor at that size.

  5. That's why I only suggest buying the Sony XBR.  It converts a regular analog signal into a digitally enhanced signal, rendering a better picture for non-HD programming.
