  1. Why would you want to get rid of that!? Those are so classic and nowadays are very desired.  Just restore it if it's not in good shape. Those tubs make for a really relaxing bath.  If you want to be able to shower in it you can always install a shower head.

  2. This is a question for the landlord to answer.

  3. Way more than u are going to want to spend on a rented apartment...You have the cost of the tub will start at $300, the cost of the shower fixture and trim, will start at about $100, plus the labor for a contractor to take out your old tub and completely revamp the space in order to be able to install a shower, install the tub, plumber to install the faucets/shower...your probably looking at close to $1000.

  4. Your question is the equivalent of asking why the sun rises. There are many factors that will affect the price of a bathroom remodel like this. What are your tastes? Basic fiberglass tub and tub wall combos can be bought for less than $1000 right up to luxury cast iron whirlpools for mid-four figures. Can you live with basic ceramic tile or do you need the richness of marble? The other major factor will be the level of labor to perform plumbing and construction to make the changeover. Is your apartment located in a pre-war Manhattan high-rise or a basement apartment located in someone's house?

My advice: Start shopping the Lowes and Home Depots and calling in reputable contractors for no-obligation estimates. Then you'll get sense of costs in your area and strike a balance between costs and your decorating tastes.

  5. You can actually restore that old claw tub and they are awesome.  My mom has one and as a tall teen I remember being able to relax and lay back and enjoy a bath.  Now as an adult I have my own basic tub/shower combo and I am too tall to relax comfortably, I would love to have a claw tub...re-think this as I really think you will be disappointed in the long run.
