I just got 2 new cats from a woman who didn't want them anymore, and now i have had them 3 days. They both just hide under my sofa and won't come out until late at night. Also only one of them is eating and going to the toilet! Is this normal what should i do?

Any help is much appreciated.

  2. hey lucy,

    i have 4cats !

2 of them did this when i brought them home, its quite common for this to happen, the cat is scared and is trying to get used to your house. Also may i add that cats are nocturnal animals i.e sleep in the day hunt at night.Try to befriend the cats, pick them up and play with them move the couch that's what we did and eventually they came along !

its probably just missing its old surroundings and doesn't recognize anything especially the smell of your house cats have a decent ability to sniff things out.

  3. They probably need at least a couple of weeks to adjust to their new surroundings. Talk to them often so they will get used to your voice. You might also want to put  something like an old t shirt, something that smells like you in their hiding space. Also, you might want to put a box with a blanket in a hidden spot, so they will have somewhere to curl up.

    Good luck!!

  4. This is very normal.  The cats will come out when they are comfortable and not so scared.  Just make sure you leave out plenty of food and water at night, maybe a couple of litter boxes close to the couch.  At night they are probably exploring the house, and when they get used to their surroundings, they will come out more often.  Just be patient, this could take a little while.

  5. hi, yes it is very normal they don't really know you yet so they have to get ready on there own it won't take long try and get them out hold and talk to them you would be bashful to if you were brought into a new home everything will be fine have some patients. good luck with the kitties

  6. That sounds about right for the first few days!!!  :)  Try some "Feliway" spray or plug in diffusser.  It has pheremones that can help calm cats down.

  7. I had this same exact situation! They were brother and sister, and very skiddish! You don't need to worry, even if it seems like they are going to hide under the couch and behind the washing machine forever (that's what I thought!) they won't. Cats are very smart, or at least smart enough to eat and use the litter box when they need to. It took ours weeks to become even close to normal. But now they are very warm and loving and run right up to visitors.

Just keep putting out fresh food and water and give them space at night or whenever to come out and when they do come out act calm like it ain't no thing, we brushed mine and he loved it and after that he was out for good!

    Good luck!
