Question:

My new chicken hardly eats! ?

We got her a few days ago and she hardly eats anything! Our other chickens mostly ignore her and she ignored them. She used to live in a pen with 30-40 other chickens so she must know how to eat, she just doesn't seem interested in what we have. She ate some bugs and some cat food but very half-heartedly. I found her a juicy potato bug and she pecked at it and flung it about but wouldn't eat it. We have grains and mash and grass and bread and table scraps but she just wanders around and sleeps. When we are outside she follows us. She doesn't have snot or an elevated temp. Also, she doesn't scratch like the other chickens or take dust baths.

  1. how did u introduce your chicken to your flock. the best time to introduce a new chicken to the flock is at twilight or dusk. and they more easily accept a newcomer when they just wake up with them. she may be going through an ajustment period. chickens are very sociable and need to be part of a group. continue giving her fresh water and food and see if the other chickens are preventing her from eating. she could also be depressed (its true) and alone, and thats why.

  2. "She doesn't have snot"

it looks like water but itsnot.

    maybe shes anorexic.

    just kidding.

give her time to adjust to her new settings?

  3. Maybe you're not giving it the right feed. Maybe it likes chicken?

  4. well like everything it needs time to settle and get acquainted with your other hens and you

also what you are feeding your hens is probably different to what she is used to eating so that'll take a bit of time too.

so give her a few days more and make sure food is there and when she is hungry enough she will eat it trust me.

also she has to try and deal with a new area a new group of chickens, and new owners.

she will have to be established in the pecking order . . that will take time and there will be a few squabbles along the way but as long as no blood is lost leave well be.

    Good Luck (Y)
