Okay I got a hamster yesterday. It's a girl and really fat. She was really nice and sweet in the pet store but once I got her home she started to hiss at me. What can I do to earn her love and trust?

Also I think she might be pregnant. She's a really big hamster and fat... so how do you tell that? The pet store had boys and girls together in one cage...

  1. let her get used to you first.

  2. give her a few days of quiet and let her get used to her new home and environment before you try to handle her. If the pet store had male and females together then they were clearly irresponsible. Chances are that she is and unless you want tons of them once she gives birth and they are 4 weeks old seperate the males out you may also try taking them back to the pet store sometimes they will take the babies.

  3. she is probably homesick because she is not used to the enviorment try and leave her alone for a day or two un till she gets used to her new home!!

and you might want to try taking it to the vet to see if she is pregenant but most of the time hamsters are fat

  4. yeah she's definetly pregnant. make sure when she delivers to NEVER touch the babies until 3-4 weeks of age, when they MUST be seperated (at that age, 3 weeks) if you lay one touch on they before they move out, the mother will eat them. sorry it's sad but true... if you don't want to deal w/ that take her back to the pet store just while she gives birth. hope that helped! :)

  5. If she is pregnant, she will be more irritable. You will start seeing a more Lumpy belly as she grows - babies! They have babies within 16 days, so it won't take long for you to know. If she has babies - do not touch them for first 2-3 weeks!!! After that, it should be okay (at least it was for our 2 female hamsters that had litters) and we handled babies quite a bit so they were very calm and tame before giving them away!

If she's not pregnant, she's just scared of her new surroundings. Keep trying to pick her up and hold her close. The more you do, the tamer she will get - watch out for biting though!

  6. my turtle hissed at me the first time i took him home also, then he got better.

  7. ahh, the ol' hissy hampster. that's fabulously awesome!

    things not to do:

    1. let it play w/ the cat

    2. fill her cage with bees

    3. put superglue on her waterbottle

eventually, she'll decide you're not going to cause her any great harm and she'll stop hissing. in the meantime, i'd name her something great like "hissy fit". yes, that would do just perfectly.

  8. umm she probably is nervous and scared. she is in a new home and not used to her surrounding. you need to be gentle and calming and have plenty of food toys and love for her. make her know you are not scared and are not trying to hurt her. it takes a little while to get ajusted. dont get nervous if she doesnt act playful at first that was my mistake.comfort her and hold her and soon she will no you are good. put your self in her shoes how would you feel in you were put in a box and took to a house where you new nothing and no one. kinda scary right. and puting the boys and the girls together wasnt a good idea if you think she is pregnant take her to the vet and get it checked out hope it helped. oh and make sure you have a place for her to hide when she is scared and doesnt want to be bothered. like an igloo.
