My new hamster is scared, what do I do?

We just got a hamster, but it hides in a corner and looks sad and scared. How do I convince her that I want to be his friend?

Leave her in the cage for 24 hours.

It is a good idea to leave your new hamster alone in their new home without handling them for about 2 weeks.  Make sure you have given the hammy enough room to exercise, burrow, and have a nice cozy place to sleep.  Make sure to clean the cage every few days to keep her healthy.  I give my daughter's hammy fresh veggies (she loves corn and broccoli!) and sunflower seeds.  My daughter got her hammy on July 19th and the hamster is just now comfortable with us handling her.

Give her a chance!  You'll have years together, so a few weeks shouldn't be tough to get through!  GL!

let it find out on its own. just don't wake it up or take its food bowl, don't go in the cage except to feed it, make sure the room is quiet and that there are no dogs, cats, etc. with it. in a couple of days, start to tame it and it will warm up to you and your voice and scent. it will still bite if you wake it up anytime.

the best thing you can do for it is to leave it in the cage for about 3 days. on 2nd and 3rd days, try to reach in and gently pet, or offer treats to get it used to your smell. if it freaks out, flips over and acts dead for a couple of seconds when you do this, its ok. they do this when they are startled, sometimes. but the little guy needs a couple days to "set up house" the way he/she likes it, so he/ she feels secure in its home before you introduce him/her to the outside of the cage. hope this helps!

Don't try to touch it or anything for a day or two. Instead, sit in front of the cage and talk very softly to it. This will get your new hamster used to both your scent and your voice. After a while the hamster will approach the front of the cage and you can try to allow it to sniff you. If it lets you put your hand near it, try and pick it up.
