I have competed at the National Level for Barrels but I bought a 8 year old PerchronXQuarter Horse Mare. She is really quiet so I bought her for my friends to ride. But she will not go past a "WALK" I kick and kick her to go but she doesn't do anything. I used the crop but she is really scared at it. I hiss and kiss but nothing. She has not been trained to back up and steer on the neck. So what suggestions can I used to make her the top notch horse for my good friends?? Should I push her harder or back off and teach her slowly with treats (not too much!). So please help me and leave some advice because this is a really dumb horse!!!!!

Thanks

  1. he not dunb you neet yo get some help OR cant not riding a all

  2. first of all the horse isnt dumb, she is just shy..go slow when trying to teach her use some treats but not to much cause then she will always be expecting treats from you. also if she is scared when you use the crop dont use it because maybe a past owner mis-treated her....show her respect then she will learn and respect you back...

    Good Luck

    :D

  3. Have you tried just putting her in a ring and lunging her or chasing her past a walk? Or try hiring a trainer for her or ask your vet.

  4. These horses are so verstile because of there personality, they make great school horses and vaulting horses when people will take the time with them.  Most people just don't take the time or use the patientce to slow down and work on the draft cross level.  They aren't dumb, part of me thinks they are too smart.  You have to prove to them it's worth learning but after that they'll NEVER forget.  You mare was probably rushed and now she is whip shy because someone tried to force her to understand.  If you have a round pen start lunging her under tack.  I like free lunging in the begining with young horses or long lining (which can be really hard for inexperienced people) or at least with side reins just to make sure they develop evenly.  Make sure you use the same commands every time that you'll use when you begin riding and you can even have someone lunge you on her after she begins to come along a little.  Just don't lose faith in her and try not to set a time table in your head for her.  She'll come along in her own time, and the more you work with her consitilently the fast she'll move.  Lots of short, planned schooling sessions will do her worlds of good.  Good Luck

  5. I think lunging will be the best way to get this horse to do what you want her to do. It may just be that she was trained to always go slow and has to be taught that it is okay to go fast when someone is on her.

  6. i lost £20 on that horse on saturday

  7. with those too docile breeds together, i bet its a calm one.

i used to have a horse that was the same way. i just worked with him. A LOT of lunging so that they get the idea of a faster pace, and your commands.

it will take a little time but my horse picked it right up.

the horse is young and green so it just doesn't know, he needs some one to teach him, and that's you.

treats wont really do it, you just need to teach hI'm to respect the rider, slowly. but i would do lunging not so much riding until he knows what you want.

once he understands what you want, im sure he'll do it.

  8. Try working her on the rope in circles with a long whip to encourage her. Teach her fast pace trot and canter and work that every day with and without rider. You can also try a softer bit and using spurs. Make sure an experienced rider helps you so she will learn the comands correctly.

She sounds like a sweetie, albeit a green one. Your idea to go slow and retrain her will set her path for her real work. Some people say warmbloods,in this case a nice cross like you have are too mellow. If that was true they would not be raking in the big points for jumping! Maybe your big girl is just too novice to understand, and has been let off the hook before. That she is whip shy says someone pushed her once, and it looks like you best go slow and see how fast she picks up. Besides a National level barrel rider, your a great friend! If someone rode your good horse, would this new one follow and learn? Lets hope shes just insecure, and a pal will show her the way.
