My new parakeet is unhappy and sad. Is she lonely?

I bought one (1) budgie/parakeet and it's been 3 weeks since it's been living with me. I come home from work after 7 hours, and the parakeet is alone all day and gets some minimal sunlight. I provide it with a mirror, toys, food, and fresh water every day but it seems to be sad, lonely, and scared. She comes near my finger, but won't chirp or make any noise at all. She looks healthy, eats well, but doesn't seem to enjoy her life.

What should I do? I do play with it about 15 minutes a day and let it out of its cage for 3 hours at night when I'm home. There's always a radio or music playing in the background when I'm gone so it's not too lonely.

  1. Try some liquid bird vitamins.  Even though you feed and

water it,  it may need some extra vitamins to give it a boost.

Sometimes, when the bird moults (sheds its feathers for new

ones) they become withdrawn and don't seem perky.  This

is when I always knew my parakeet needed bird vitamins

and I'd put some in his water dish.  Check closely and see

if your bird is moulting.  If you see a lot of feathers on the

floor of the cage, then it is.  Parakeets become rather

vulnerable to colds and infections when they're moulting so

give your bird some vitamins and I bet you will see a difference.  Of course it may still act quiet for a few days

but then it will perk up. Also, don't let it try and fly around

when its moulting.  It may not fly well and crash into something!

       Give this a try.

                 Good luck!

  2. i agree with mackarana.. shes lonely and depressed because she doesnt have anyone to play with..

    get her a friend. ;)

  3. He totally needs a friend. My mother got a blue parakeet for my younger sister for Christmas last year and it looked soooo depressed; wouldn't make any noise and always stayed in the far back corner of his cage. My mother went back to the pet store and told them about our sad birdie (Mr. Puff'n chucks, because he gets really puffy when he's content.) My mom put his cage up to the parakeet enclosure to see if he would be happier if he went back to where he came from. Suddenly Mr.P started 'talking' with this other yellow parakeet. We decided to get that other bird!!! Mr. Puff'n chucks became so much happier and more social!    Your parakeet just needs some parakeet company! Go for it, I guarantee your bird will be so much happier!

  4. The thing is:

    - she is extremely lonely

    - and you have no time for her

You should get it a partner. This will kill all her boredom. Too many toys won;t work either. So good luck!

  5. i think he needs a friend cuz ur not home to much    my bird is always out even when im not home   and only goes in to sleep

  6. if you want unending parakeet chirps then buy another parakeet

if u want it to talk to you then spend some time with it and DONT get it a parakeet friend

toys help yes sometimes take its cage outside but makesure it cant escape cuz i lost 2 of my parakeets that way... T.T

i never could get my parakeet to talk to me tho so i guess you should by another parakeet
